Gilles Poizat: when music and ecology go hand in hand

Champignon Flamme , released on February 12, 2021 by Carton Records , is the first solo album by French musician Gilles Poizat . The album is the story of pebbles drifting in the bottom of a stream. While the water flows continuously, the pebbles move very discontinuously affecting the ow of the water. The six tracks arise from the interaction of the trumpet with the modular synths: each instrumental has a different patch so that the sound of the trumpet modulated through analog synthesis generates sounds randomly. The result is a lively, unpredictable and improvised work.

The Galet dérivant opener is the perfect business card: while the trumpet improvises, its sound is filtered through 4 delays with variable parameters that generate an electronic synthesis used as a sound carpet on which the acoustic instrument rests. The ending is obtained by randomly intoning the delays which, repeated over time, create a strangely tuned organ choir. With Traversée de la table the sound of the trumpet is camouflaged by compact electronic bounces. Sinister streaks accompany the background polyrhythm and synthetic digressions in a riot of sound writing on the verge of free-jazz.

Cérémonie de la brume opens with a claustrophobic synthetic texture, a static sound texture that comes alive with the entrance of the trumpet. In the six minutes of the track we pass from the abstractness of the electronic synthesis to a mental sound that directly affects the psyche of the listener thanks to the combination of the warm sonorities of the trumpet and the low and dissonant sounds. Champignon Flamme is an ambitious and complex album. Six chapters that summarize the insights of Gilles Poizat, the result moves in the context of the dichotomy “cold / hot”, “human / mechanical”, as one would expect in a work in which the trumpet and the modular are equally protagonists. A successful connection.
