hassan k. | gharbzadeh
This album follows in the chronological tradition of Hassan K.’s previous LPs. It draws on pre-modern Iran, centred on the Qajar dynasty—a dynasty of six rulers who reigned from the late 18th century to the first quarter of the 20th century, and who opened the kingdom to Westernization despite the expansionist ambitions of Russia and the British Empire. This breach in the crossroads nation of Eurasia fostered a phenomenon of “Westernization” (Gharbzadeh, the album’s title), a term theorized by Jalal Al-e Ahmad, an Iranian writer and critic, to describe the evils that were imposed and altered Iran’s cultural habits. This phenomenon is recounted through 12 tracks that explore the transformations of the Iranian landscape, drugs, and imperialist violence.
A Bollywood-core album that blends surf rock, traditional rhythms, math rock, metal, and electro, featuring several prestigious guest artists: Sara Fontan (Los Sara Fontan), Charles Kieny (Ckraft), Tesla Manaf (Kuntari), and Masto (Lucrate Milk, Bérurier Noir).
